<p>I&#8217;d like to explain an important concept that most online trainers (even the &#8220;gurus&#8221;) don&#8217;t &#8220;get&#8221;&#8230;</p>
<p>Have you ever heard that &#8216;nutrition is common sense?&#8217;</p>
<p>Have you ever thought about why the United States has an epidemic of overweight individuals and kids that are out of shape?  Or that most people talk about how in their younger days they were able to do this and that.  Yet these people are only 30 years old?</p>
<p>Most people think nutrition is common sense. But these people are completely wrong.</p>
<p>You see, common sense isn&#8217;t specialized knowledge, but just native good judgment.  Many times common sense is when it comes to many things in life are learned behaviors from parents, teachers, mentors or coaches.  We get at lot of this common knowledge thru what we see as well.  Driving on the right of left side of the road is common sense in your country.  You get this from what you see.</p>
<p>The REAL four biggest problems when it comes to nutrition and common sense is that:</p>
<p>1- You learn what to eat from T.V.  How crazy is that?  I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;ve seen a good commercial about just eating right.  It&#8217;s always about diets, points, fad diets, crazy workout stuff or fast food.  Many kids get plenty of T.V.  They don&#8217;t understand why sugar cereal isn&#8217;t part of a complete breakfast.</p>
<p>2- You learn what you see at home.  If you were a witness to a lot of healthy eating habits (fruits, vegetables, moderate portions) then you probably got a lot of your good eating habits from your parents or guardians.</p>
<p>3- You learn to finish everything that&#8217;s put in front of you. Does it matter if your hunger was satisfied half-way thru the meal?  Or have you been told it was rude not to eat everything.  You start to learn that finishing what&#8217;s in front of you is more important then if you are hungry or not.</p>
<p>4- You learn nutrition at school.  Some schools have good programs.  Many do not.  The only exposure most school children receive is the food pyramid.  And then it&#8217;s off to lunch period where they are served fish sticks and a variety of other unhealthy items.  Only a few schools have a very healthy lunch option.  It&#8217;s pretty rare.  You learn more about ancient Egyptians then you do about how to put together a healthy meal and what the heck is a complex carb.</p>
<p>This is an important concept &#8212; so let me break it down and explain it in detail.</p>
<p>Most things we learn are common sense.  It&#8217;s common sense not to touch a hot stove.  Why?  Somebody told you or you tried it and your body responded by telling the pain receptors in your hand that it didn&#8217;t like that.</p>
<p>You learned the stove was hot and not fun to touch.  Common sense.  It didn&#8217;t require any specialized knowledge.</p>
<p>Then it hit me&#8230;</p>
<p>Neither should nutrition.  It doesn&#8217;t require any specialized knowledge to eat correctly.  But yet it&#8217;s not common sense.</p>
<p>The reason most people get it wrong is because they were never taught!</p>
<p>They received a lot of information from T.V. which was promoting diets and fast food and sugar cereals.</p>
<p>Their parents didn&#8217;t learn either so they passed that onto their children.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s a pressure to finish everything that is put in front of you (don&#8217;t be wasteful) ignoring the absence of the hunger feeling.</p>
<p>The lack of sound nutrition in most schools.  You learn how to read in school.  You learn how to write.  You learn how to solve math problems.  You learn history and you learn different cultures.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll bet you can guess what happened next.</p>
<p>You never learn the definition of a complete meal.</p>
<p>You start by learning that right now&#8230;</p>
<p>A complete meal always includes a lean protein and a natural, complex carbohydrate. The best meal of all for muscle-building and fat-burning purposes contains three things:</p>
<p>1. Lean protein (chicken, fish, egg whites, etc)</p>
<p>2. Starchy carb (potato, rice, etc)</p>
<p>3. Fibrous carb (broccoli, green beans, salad, etc)</p>
<p>And that, is the biggest benefit of having a complete meal and understanding just how simple it is to create meals with these three steps.</p>

<p>What are Glyconutritionals?</p>
<p>The Greek word &#8220;Glyco&#8221; means &#8220;Sugar&#8221;. Most people think of sugar as being bad for you. However, there are actually TWO kinds of sugars. One is the refined or &#8220;extracellular&#8221; sugars which have been long associated with human disease. The other sugars are &#8220;intracellular&#8221; which can be found in fruits and vegetables and provide the body with nutrition it needs. These sugars, also known as &#8220;complex carbohydrates&#8221;, have been studied for years.  However, only recently have we begun discovering their purpose in the body.</p>
<p>An increasing number of scientists believe that certain carbohydrates represent the next frontier in the search for non-toxic treatments for various degenerative conditions. Even though we have just begun to scratch the surface in understanding the full potential of these carbohydrates, the research being reported in just the last decade has ignited a new level of hope and optimism with some of the world&#8217;s leading immunologists.   The March 23, 2001 issue of Science Magazine is devoted to the topic of cellular communication and the role that simple sugars play in that arena.</p>
<p>Healthy bodies are comprised of many components working together in sophisticated harmony, and must have accurate internal communication to function correctly. In it&#8217;s most basic form, this communication occurs at the cellular level.   Glyonutrients form what can be referred to as the &#8220;alphabet&#8221; of your body!</p>
<p>To maintain a healthy body, cells must &#8220;talk&#8221; to each other. Their language is one of touch, written in saccharides (or simple sugars) on the cell surfaces. These simple sugars combine with other molecules to make glycoforms such as glycoproteins when combined with proteins or glycolipids when combined with fat. Of the 200 monosaccharides that occur naturally in plants, 8 have been discovered to be components in the cell surface glycoforms (see Harper&#8217;s Textbook of Biochemistry&#8211;1996). Like thousands of different &#8220;keys&#8221; projecting from the cell surface, they will either unlock the required functions of the adjoining cell or not. If the right keys are available, the body functions smoothly. If not, it doesn&#8217;t. Acta Anatomica, a European journal, states that these simple sugars have a coding capacity that surpasses that of amino acids!!</p>
<p>Only two of the eight monosaccharides are found in today&#8217;s diet. Our diets have changed in response to the demands for quicker, cheaper food. Consequently, we are not eating foods that contain the necessary fuels for our cells to communicate in a healthy, effective manner. While our body has the capacity to manufacture these simple sugars, the conversion process is complicated. During the conversion process your cells are exposed to tens of thousands of free radical hits each day. This requires time, energy and a host of other micronutrients in order to complete the conversion. Viruses can also interfere with our body&#8217;s ability to make these conversions. People who are ill or who have inborn errors of metabolism are especially vulnerable to a breakdown in the process. Whenever the monosaccharides cannot be made, communication is slowed down or impaired as a result.</p>
<p>Since your body has more than trillion cells and fully regenerates all of its cells in approximately 1 year, any miscommunication or slowdown could cause major health problems. With millions of cells regenerating each day, it&#8217;s easy to imagine what could happen if during this process, the cells didn&#8217;t regenerate correctly.  This is why glyconutritional supplements are so very important!</p>

<p>Getting old is not for the faint at heart. Your body seems to show more aches and pains. One way to manage pain and stay limber as you age is through choreographed movement.</p>
<p>Tai chi is an ancient Eastern art form. It combines elements of ancient Indian yoga with a delicate type of Oriental martial arts. Many methods of tai chi have their roots in more warrior forms of martial arts. </p>
<p>Movements associated with many martial art forms are performed slowly and with great precision. During battles, locals who practiced tai chi could be drafted to fight because of their skills.</p>
<p>While tai chi isn’t used for fighting battles, it can be used to help seniors improve their quality of life. The aging process not only affects the outside of the body, but the inside as well. One key to fighting the ravages of time is through staying active. </p>
<p>Now, you won’t see many seniors running down the basketball court or hopping from side to side in your advanced aerobic classes. Bone density also changes with time. But, staying active can help preserve bone and help with balance and coordination.</p>
<p>Another aspect of movement is cessation of pain. Joints become stiff when not used. Any type of injury at an advanced age can lead to a slower recovery period that is riddled with pain. You may not want to move and when you do, it is hard.</p>
<p>Tai chi classes are one way that seniors can keep moving without danger of breaking more bones. The slow deliberate movements stress form, breathing and strength – all things that a person of any age will need. </p>
<p>Tai chi is a sort of moving meditation. Through deep breathing, more oxygen gets to the cells to keep the body functioning properly. Seniors will notice an increase in energy levels. That oxygen also helps to improve cellular repair leading to less pain in the joints. </p>
<p>Seniors also notice that they are better able to maintain their balance and co-ordination. This is helpful for negotiating steps and making quick movements. An older person can remain independent and live on their own much longer when their bodies are physically fit and free of pain.</p>
<p>This form of exercise can also lower the dependence on medications. Your blood pressure is lowered when you stay active and your mood improves with the release of endorphins in the brain. That eliminates depressive medication and those for high blood pressure.</p>
<p>Seniors who stay active generally have a more positive outlook. They interact with others their age, developing friendships and a renewed zest for life.</p>
<p>Tai chi is a great way to manage and alleviate pain as you move into your senior years. Classes are held at senior centers and the YMCA. <p>              <P>Shortly after Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter was treated for significant injuries related to a bicycle crash, the Colorado House of Representatives passed legislation that may require children under the age of 18 to wear a helmet if made into a law. The 33-32 vote held on March 3, 2010 will head to the state Senate for further deliberation.</P><P>Proposed by Fort Collins Democratic Rep. John Kefalas, House Bill 1147 has the potential to make Colorado the 23 state including the District of Columbia to make helmets required by law for youth riders. In addition to state laws, close to 200 local laws attempt to curb annual bicycle-related injuries.</P><P>Helmet Laws Reduce Medical Costs<BR />The Child Safety Network reports that close to 200 children under the age of 15 die each year from a bicycle-related injury. Each year, close to 9,000 children are hospitalized and 344,000 additional children are treated in emergency rooms for injuries sustained from a bicycle accident. Bicycle helmets prevent 52 to 60 percent of bike-related head injury deaths, 68-85 percent of nonfatal head and scalp injuries and 65 percent of upper and middle face injuries &#8211; results that may be increased as helmet laws expect to reduce medical costs for bike-related injuries.</P><P>Bicycle accidents can result in costly traumatic brain injuries. These type of injuries can impact quality of life, reduce future earnings due to permanent disability and can often result in costly medical bills. The CSN estimates that &#8220;if 85 percent of all child cyclists wore helmets in 1 year, the lifetime medical cost savings would total $197 to $256 million.</P><P>The Colorado government is estimated to save $110 per year in medical costs for each helmet that is worn &#8211; a figure that could result in $1 million a month in savings.</P><P>Traumatic Brain Injuries and Children<BR />According to the United States Center for Disease Control, the following statistics reveal the number of children age 0 to 14 who fall victim to a traumatic brain injury:</P><P>* 2,685 deaths<BR />* 37,000 hospitalizations<BR />* 435,000 emergency department visits annually</P><P>Preventative measures to reduce the number of brain injuries that occur each year would be fiscally beneficial and would help improve the quality of life for active children &#8211; ensuring their safety during the activities they love. Preventative measures are anticipated to reduce the number of traumatic brain injury lawsuits filed by those seeking monetary compensation.<BR /></P><br />

That means no calorie counting, skipping meals or eliminating carbs.</P><P>Anyone can do it. It&#8217;s safe, simple and easy.</P><P>And the thrilling part is&#8230;</P><P>Seven days is way more than enough time to drop a dress size. I&#8217;ve seen some of my female friends do it in just three!</P><P>So if you begin right now, in just seven days or less those jeans will button like a breeze and you&#8217;ll be getting lots of compliments!</P><P>Who knows&#8230; you can probably drop two or three dress sizes!</P><P>Let&#8217;s begin.</P><P>The most confusing thing for women is knowing exactly what to focus on.</P><P>Here&#8217;s what I mean&#8230;.</P><P>Losing weight is really very simple. There are only about three &#8220;main&#8221; things that cause the greatest results. The problem is that most women try to do too much. They focus on all the &#8220;little&#8221; stuff.</P><P>This makes losing weight way too hard.</P><P>Here&#8217;s what I mean&#8230;</P><P>Many women have lost 10 pounds.</P><P>And while they may have done a whole bunch of dieting type stuff: skipping meals, counting calories, reading labels, eating six small meals, eating bad tasting food, cutting out pasta, exercising and a hundred other things&#8230; only about three of those things caused the greatest results.</P><P>&#8211; It wasn&#8217;t counting calories.</P><P>&#8211; It wasn&#8217;t cutting out pasta.</P><P>&#8211; It wasn&#8217;t reading labels.</P><P>&#8211; And it wasn&#8217;t eating bad tasting food.</P><P>No. These things probably only made a small difference. Here&#8217;s what caused the fastest results&#8230;</P><P>Let&#8217;s start with exercise.</P><P>The best time to exercise is in the morning before you eat anything.</P><P>This will force your body to burn fat because there is no food in your stomach. (This will account for a huge chunk of the weight you lose.)</P><P>Secondly.</P><P>Eating six small meals. This is nothing new, but it works like gangbusters. So eat just six meals spread about 2.5 hours apart. (This will account for the next huge chunk of the weight you lose.)</P><P>And finally&#8230; let me explain the &#8220;one other thing&#8221;.</P><P>It&#8217;s called &#8220;carb-timing&#8221;.</P><P>Basically, all you want to do is just stop eating &#8220;starchy&#8221; carbs like bread, pasta and fruit for the last two meals of your day.</P><P>Starchy carbs get stored as fat when you sleep. It makes losing weight much harder.</P><P>So that&#8217;s it.</P><P>Just&#8230;</P><P>1. Exercise in the morning before you eat.</P><P>2. Eat six small meals per day.</P><P>3. Use carb-timing.</P><P>From what I&#8217;ve seen, just those three things will have the greatest impact.</P><P>They can easily cause you to drop a dress size in 7 days or less!<BR /></P><br />

<p>When they are an infant, it’s cute. As they get older it can cause problems. We are talking about thumb sucking. If your child is moving into toddler years and they are still fond of this habit, there are ways that you can curb it.</p>
<p>Thumb sucking is a natural reflex for babies. Some have been shown on ultrasound to be engaging in this action while still in the womb. In case you haven’t noticed, babies often put their thumb in their mouth when they are crying or irritable. It is a soothing action that makes them feel better. Think of the action as a natural pacifier.</p>
<p>But thumbs are just the beginning. Your baby will also suck on their toes (if they can reach them), clothes, toys and anything else they can get their hands on. It is their way of examining the universe around them. </p>
<p>One concern that parents have is that thumb sucking may ruin their child’s teeth. Sucking the thumb can push the teeth forward and move them out of alignment. It can affect the formation of the roof of their mouth also. </p>
<p>With baby teeth, this is not such an issue. These teeth will fall out in time anyway. But, once permanent teeth come in, the effects of thumb sucking are more noticeable.</p>
<p>If you are beside yourself because your toddler is still using that thumb, gauge the circumstances in which they are using it. At bedtime, a thumb can help them fall asleep. Once they are down for the night, you can remove their thumb from their mouth.</p>
<p>Many kids stop using their thumb when they start teething. It can be quite painful when teeth break the gum line and they will turn to their thumb for comfort. Many find that something harder and colder works better. They swap their thumb for a teething ring or frozen waffle.</p>
<p>If teething doesn’t break the habit, try giving them something else to do at bedtime. Tiring out your little one with play before bedtime can help them fall asleep faster without needing their thumb. Try reading a book or giving them a bath beforehand. Other soothing acts can replace the thumb-sucking action.</p>
<p>Help your child notice that no one else in their class is sucking their thumb. As he becomes aware of this, he will be more likely to stop the action in front of them. No longer dependent on the thumb, the action may stop altogether.</p>
<p>Whenever you notice the thumb popping back into the mouth, suggest activities that take two hands so the thumb is not available. Over time, they will find interest in other things more appealing.</p>
<p>Do you have a thumb sucker in your midst? Don’t worry about it too soon. As they approach school age, use the above suggestions to help them find other uses for those hands. </p>

<p>The largest organ in the body is actually on the outside of it. It’s your skin, and problems inside the body show up really easily here. Think of your skin as an internal environment thermometer. </p>
<p>A steam room rids your largest organ of any toxins and impurities that have given it that lackluster look. Through a combination of high heat, excess moisture and aromatherapy, you will see a change in your skin after regular visits. Are you game?</p>
<p>Much like a sauna, a steam room uses high temperatures to create an artificial fever. Here, bacterial growth is decreased as the body works to remove impurities from itself. </p>
<p>Here’s how it works. As the temperature rises, steam is released into the room. This steam is great for anyone with respiratory problems. Breathing the vapors in deeply opens nasal passages, allows for freer breathing, and increases circulation. People with respiratory issues have been shown to benefit greatly from their time in a steam room. </p>
<p>Some of the perks are felt immediately. You have a sense of lightness after you leave the steam room. Your skin just seems to tingle as those toxins roll off of you and onto the floor.</p>

<p>After you have sweat so well, taking a cold shower allows your body to cool off gradually and also washes the salt and other minerals off of your skin. <p>There are precautions, though. Anyone who is pregnant, has a heart condition or is claustrophobic may want to avoid the steam room. Your doctor will advise about whether a steam room will be helpful to you. </p>
<p>Besides helping us to sleep better and heal faster, a steam bath works wonders for the skin. By removing the gunk, the skin is able to breathe again and protect your body from harm.  </p>

<p>With the release of the new dietary guidelines, in the form of the new food pyramid, I still find that many people don&#8217;t actually understand what nutrition actually means. Because of this, dietary choices can seem overwhelming. Even greater confusion can be generated by prime time news specials which only strive to educate through clever sound-bites and diet fads which lead some to believe that all of their answers are found in one single &#8220;magic food.&#8221; So what is nutrition and how can you understand it in a way that helps you apply it to your life and to the benefit of those you know and love? Here&#8217;s an analogy I have found helpful in teaching those who attend my free Sunday Night Wellness Call.</p>
<p>Your body functions in a manner similar to a car assembly plant. At that plant, a steady stream of new parts, the correct parts and parts in the right ratios to each other are absolutely necessary in order to keep that plant open for business and running smoothly.</p>
<p>What would happen if someone in purchasing forgot to provide that plant with steering wheels? The cars would be almost functional. But because of a single part deficiency, that car would not be able to carry out its intended function.</p>
<p>If this only happened to a few cars, it probably wouldn&#8217;t be a big deal. You wouldn&#8217;t see any symptoms of a parts deficiency. But what if that plant had no steering wheels for an entire month? How about year? First the plant would probably close, the community would fail. Good people would move away and the &#8220;bad elements&#8221; would most likely take over the town. The lack of balanced parts would eventually lead to dire conditions.</p>
<p>What happens when the cells of your body are missing parts?</p>
<p>You eat to provide your cells with nourishment. It&#8217;s not just about calories. That nourishment is the collection of parts every cell in your body needs to function properly. You provide your cells with parts and those parts are assembled according to instructions in your DNA to create a variety of finished products. That could include new cells, of which there are many kinds, anti bodies to fight disease, neurotransmitters to carry signals between nerves, and hormones to regulate your body.</p>
<p>So again, there are beneficial raw materials in foods, which our bodies use, and need, to carry out vital cellular functions.</p>
<p>These functions keep us alive.</p>
<p>These functions combat disease.</p>
<p>These functions allow us to heal.</p>
<p>These functions allow our cells to build new cells and all of the other finished materials that are necessary for normal life and optimal <a href="http://fitnesshealthtoday.com/testlink" style="color:#000099;" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='testlink';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">health</a>.</p>
<p>And these raw materials are called nutrients.</p>
<p>We eat to give our body access to nutrients.</p>
<p>Sadly, our food does not contain the nutrients it once had in abundance, so it is necessary to supplement a good diet with quality nutritional supplementation to ensure that our cells do not suffer from a parts deficiency. We should still strive to have a good diet, from as many whole foods as possible, with supplementation being a means to supplement, not substitute, the benefits of a good diet.</p>
