Physical exercise can enhance or maintain a person’s overall health and fitness. People of all ages like to exercise for a variety of reasons. Some do it to strengthen their muscles and/or cardiovascular systems. Others exercise to hone their athletic skills. Some people exercise in order to lose weight or maintain their weight.
There are also those people who exercise just because they love the way it makes them feel.
Exercises that are designed for the elderly can help them strengthen their joints and muscles, get their blood pumping, increase their flexibility, increase their mobility, and make them feel great. This article will take a look at some of the ways many people believe that elderly citizens can get more out of life by exercising.
Even though our bodies weaken with age, there are things that we can do to make them stronger, relieve our aching joints, and make it a lot easier to become more active.
In addition to the health benefits, getting involved in a fitness program is one of the best ways for elderly people to socialize and meet new friends.
When we exercise, our bodies release a chemical called an endorphin. Endorphins can make us immediately feel happier and more alive. So, if you know anyone – young or old – that is suffering from depression, you might want to suggest that they exercise because endorphins alone might make them feel better.
However, that is not the only benefit that people can realize from exercise. For example, aerobic exercises are also known to bring additional glucose and oxygen to the brain.
Both oxygen and glucose are crucial to improving your brain function because your body will respond by forming new capillaries. These new capillaries will bring more blood to your nerve cells, which will give you a boost in the brain chemicals that strengthen and protect your neurons and neural connectors.
Consequently, aerobic exercises may actually improve a person’s memory. Regular exercise is also believed to increase alertness and attention. These, too, may increase your ability to remember things.
A regular exercise program can be one of the best weapons you have at your disposal to combat disease and slow down (and perhaps even reverse) the effects of aging. Engaging in a regular exercise program may actually be the closest that anybody will come to the proverbial fountain of youth.
Of course, before embarking on any exercise program, you should always get your doctor’s advice. Exercises that work for one person may be detrimental to another, so make sure to speak with your medical practitioner before following any suggestions.
