Bench Pressing Speed Reommendation
Bench pressing slowly is a big mistake that many lifters make especially when they are first starting to train. There are people that will suggest that bench pressing slowly is the best method to develop muscle and strength, but this is not the case.
When you lift weights slowly you increase the pace at which lactic acid forms in the muscle area. The soreness that you feel in the muscle area is more likely from lactic acid than muscle stimulation.
When you’re bench pressing you should be lifting the weight as fast as you can but still pay attention to your form as well. It is not recommended you sacrifice technique for speed in any manner whatsoever as this could lead to injury and poor development.
One way to develop speed is to focus on your breath as you’re pressing the weight upward. For instance you would bring the weight down in a controlled manner while inhaling deeply into your chest then exploding upward and exhaling at the same time. This little manipulation of your breathing will help you to increase the speed of the repetition.
If you’re just starting out bench pressing you should pay close attention to developing the proper form of performing the exercise. As you progress over time and your strength increases you will be able to increase your speed naturally.
Explosive power is more useful and is developed by training as fast as you can. Lifting slowly can be very harmful to the body and create too much stress on the muscles but not increase the benefit to the muscles.
If you are not sure if you’re performing the exercise properly you should seek out assistance. Don’t ask a personal trainer unless that trainer also trains power lifters. Power lifters are the select group of lifters who actually bench press properly. You would be amazed the little tips and tricks you can learn from these guys to improve your bench pressing abilities.
